After World War II, rumors circulated that a secret organization “Odessa” had smuggled Nazi war criminals out of Europe. But “Odessa” was mostly a myth. Historian Gerald Steinacher provides the true story of how many Nazis fled from Europe, highlighting the key roles played by the Red Cross, the Vatican, and the Secret Services of the major powers. The book takes a hard look at these groups and the role they played in making it possible for thousands of Nazis, war criminals, and collaborators to slip through the hands of Nuremberg justice and find refuge.
