Say hello to the Fediverse – the free, open internet's revolt against big tech's closed, proprietary platforms.
The major commercial social media platforms are often described as toxic, privacy-invasive and deliberately addictive. They thrive on lock-in effects, and enshittification is the natural evolution of these services. The alternative: decentralised social networks based on open technology that give you freedom of choice in terms of which community you want to join and which software you want to use. Within the Fediverse, there are alternatives to microblogging services like X, image sharing platforms like Instagram, video services like YouTube and event calendars like MeetUp. And since they are all based on the same technology, you can of course browse, like, comment and share across borders.
We are glad to invite Jon Arvid Johnson from the Uppsala Linux User Group, who will introduce us to the Fediverse. After the presentation there will be time to try out some Fediverse services yourself and network.
