UNLAP research
We are experts on threatened languages all over the world, and now we set out to discover and document the linguistically unknown: What is possible in human language?
We shall:
- Discover and investigate unknown and underexplored linguistic phenomena.
- Investigate the full extent of human language and experience within the areas time, space, person and matter.
- Discover and investigate unusual language phenomena in grammar and words.
- Map and document the world's linguistic diversity before it is too late.
- Develop a digital resource to secure these data for future generations.
UNLAP brings together Sweden’s leading experts on language documentation, linguistic diversity, and linguistic fieldwork in an unprecedented collaboration between four Swedish universities. It consolidates an international and interdisciplinary network of scholars, and it nurtures a new generation of researchers in Sweden and abroad.
Observatories och themes
UNLAP Observatories
We explore language phenomena all over the world. We have five main observatories: Arwako in Colombia, East Bantu in southern Africa, Hindukush in Central Asia, Bomberai in New Guinea and Aslian in Malaysia and Thailand. We also have ten associate observatories.
UNLAP research themes
UNLAP’s exploration is structured along four conceptual themes of universal relevance for representation in human language and cognition: Person and Perspective, Counting and Measuring, Space and Environment and Time and Transition.
