Research partnerships and competence centres
For us, collaboration and cooperation in research is a central and crucial component of our research. Collaboration drives our research forward and acts as a catalyst for innovation and success in our various fields of research.
Involvement in a centre is a good option for companies that want to take a more long-term approach to research. Here it is possible to propose and run research projects that require more focused investments. Involvement in a centre leads to both long-term knowledge building in a relevant subject area and a well-developed network of contacts.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering participates in many competence centres, centres of excellence, platforms and networks that invite collaboration outside academia.
National competence centres
At Uppsala University there are five national centres of excellence, which act as hubs for specific research. Two of the national centres of excellence are linked to the Department of Materials Science.
Additive Manufacturing for the Life Sciences
Research and development of new 3D printing technologies, including complex structures for improved bioprocesses, more reproducible 3D tumour models and faster optimisation of medication. The centre is funded by Vinnova.

Solar Electricity Research Centre (SOLVE)
SOLVE is a strategic partnership between Sweden's excellent research base in solar power and a broad and committed group of actors in the public and private sectors. The centre's common vision is a broad impact for solar power in Sweden through smart and thoughtful integration in cities, on land and in the energy system, to contribute to the sustainability goals. The centre also intends to have a clear role for Swedish companies in the expansion of solar electricity both in Sweden and internationally. The centre is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Research centers and other networks
The division collaborates with several different centres, projects and initiatives, all with different purposes and sizes. We work to strengthen collaborations and improve the exchange of experiences for increased quality in research and education.
WISE
WISE is a research programme for a more sustainable society through research and technology development in advanced materials science. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has a long tradition of close and broad collaboration with WISE.
Initiativet för additiv tillverkning vid Ångströmlaboratoriet (AM@Å)
The Additive Manufacturing Initiative at the Ångström Laboratory (AM@Å) brings together research and education related to additive manufacturing at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University.
