Research at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
The departments's research, infrastructure and research divisions.
Materials Science and Engineering is an exciting and vibrant interdisciplinary research area. The Department of Materials Science has innovative researchers, state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative research environment that can address technological and societal challenges both now and in the future.
Developing materials that push technology forward
The Department focuses on various areas, such as further development of solar cells, sustainable energy storage with organic nanomaterials, and improvement of biomaterials for use in hard tissue applications and as drug delivery systems.
Our institution is also home to many national infrastructure facilities such as Myfab Uppsala. Our research and resources create an outstanding collaborative environment for pioneering research in sustainable materials and technologies.
Several of our research projects are funded by WISE, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), the Swedish Research Council and several other domestic funding organisations.
Our Divisions
Our Department has seven research Divisions that carry out high-quality research in their area of specialisation.

Hear our researchers in UppTalk
UppTalk is a popular science seminar series via Zoom where you get to enjoy interesting seminars with researchers from Uppsala University every Tuesday at lunch.
The seminars revolve around relevant topics where the audience have the opportunity to ask questions to our researchers. UppTalk is a part of the Faculty for Science and Technology’s online education initiative for alumni and the general public.
All talks are recorded and published at the YouTube page of Uppsala University after editing and subtitling.
