Doctoral Studies

The doctoral programme provides competence to conduct independent research, a deep understanding of the subject area and skills in communicating knowledge and creating conditions for the learning of others.

Join us as a Doctoral Student

As a doctoral student, you are one of the key people of the future. You contribute to the University's research and are an important representative of Uppsala University.

At the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Ångström Laboratory, there are currently about 80 doctoral students. We also welcome industrial doctoral students.

You can choose many different specialisations as the range of subjects is large and includes everything from basic research to applied and industry-related research. As a doctoral student you are active in one of our research divisions.

Postgraduate education is conducted according to a study plan at the department's divisions in different postgraduate subjects. As a doctoral student, you can complete two degrees of different lengths at the Faculty of Science and Technology: a doctoral degree in philosophy or technology and a licentiate degree in philosophy or technology.

The curriculum for post graduate studies at the Faculty of Science and Technology consists of two parts:

We offer the opportunity to become an industrial doctoral student. An industrial doctoral student has an employment in the business sector, or public sector, and may conduct research studies part-time within the service, with retained salary. An agreement is signed between the department and the company, to clarify the company's commitments in the studies.

Some industrial doctoral students carry out most of their training at their company workplace, while others spend most of their time at the institution where they were admitted. Often the doctoral student has a supervisor at the workplace and one at the institution. The opportunity for the doctoral student to combine experiences and resources from several places is very valuable. There are different ways to apply for funding for industrial doctoral students.

For more information, please contact Åsa Kassman Rudolphi (Head of Department and Collaboration Coordinator).

Application process

If you have been selected for a third-cycle programme after the eligibility review and selection process, you must then apply for admission. This is done on a special form - Application for admission to third-cycle education - directly to the department responsible for the programme. The head of department is responsible for filling in the form Cover sheet.

Recruitment

Doctoral students are normally admitted by the head of the department responsible for the subject/specialisation. Doctoral students with funding other than full-time employment as a doctoral student at Uppsala University, such as industrial doctoral students, scholarship holders, doctoral students employed at another university, part-time doctoral students and licentiate students are admitted by the Faculty Board's working committee, after preparation by the Research Education Board. In connection with admission, an individual study plan shall be drawn up.

Research studies may not begin before formal admission. So-called shadow doctoral students are not allowed.
