New materials for solar cells

The vision is to quickly gain fundamental insights into new materials, so that promising candidates can be quickly optimised towards practical solar cells.

Exploration of novel solar cell materials

The performance and sustainability of solar energy is intimately linked to the materials are the heart of the solar cell. Our materials exploration activities aim to discover improved materials for next-generation solar cells and other optoelectronic technologies.

We are combining the division’s expertise in process technology with automation and AI to build a self-driving laboratory, BERTHA, for materials exploration.

The vision is to rapidly gain fundamental insights about new materials, so that promising candidates can be quickly optimised toward device applications.

Self-driving synthesis platform "BERTHA"

BERTHA is both an experimental platform for the synthesis of thin films of optoelectronic materials, but also a prototype for an autonomous laboratory where a growing number of process steps are automated and controlled by dedicated machine learning algorithms.
