Antibiotic resistance is a global health crisis claiming 1.3 million lives every year. Globally efforts are urgently needed to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use, while providing access to those in need – notably in low-and middle income countries who bear the biggest infectious disease burden.

Next year the UN will organize the second ever high-level meeting in New York on antibiotic resistance, where bold commitments are needed to addressing antibiotic resistance globally. In particular efforts to tackle the dual problem of excessive overuse and widespread lack of access to effective antibiotics will central to these discussions. Sweden has extensive experience in addressing antibiotic resistance and working systematically in hospitals with antibiotic stewardship to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics. The STRAMA programme has been instrumental towards this end. This event will focus on how the Swedish experiences with the STRAMA programme may be useful inspiration for other countries who wish to improve stewardship of antibiotics in the human health sector. The event will also explore what obstacles low- and middle-income countries may face in adapting and implementing similar programmes in their contexts, and what can be done to overcome such obstacles.
