Research at EB-CRIME

In six subprojects we examine evidence types that are associated with challenges for decision makers in criminal jurisdictions worldwide; oral statements (source evaluation), digital evidence, molecular diagnostics, forensic medicine, forensic anthropology and age estimations. In all subprojects combined multidisciplinary methods (e.g. humanities and social sciences, technology and medicine) are used. Sources of errors in the evidence are examined and analyzed in three levels.

  1. Errors in methods and technologies that are used to produce or obtain evidence, for example evaluation of oral statements from suspects and witnesses, software to obtain digital evidence or methods to analyse mixture-DNA.
  2. Human sources of errors when using the methods and technologies during the investigative phase, for example subjectivity, individual differences and group dynamics among police officers, forensic medical doctors and forensic analysts.
  3. Human sources of errors in the interpretation of the evidence during the pre-trial and trial phase, for example prosecutors’ understanding of possible errors and judges ability to critically evaluate complex scientific evidence.
