Region Uppsala's Research Prize 2023
Region Uppsala's prize for achievements in clinical research is awarded to employees of Region Uppsala who, through their research, have contributed to significant improvements in healthcare. At the faculty meeting on 13 June, Regional Assembly Chair Erik Weiman presented the 2023 prize.

Anna Bill-Axelson, Professor and Senior Consultant, is recognised as a world-leading authority in prostate cancer. She leads several large international randomised multicentre studies that have attracted great attention and influenced clinical practice today. Anna Bill-Axelson started a podcast for men with prostate cancer in 2016 to empower patients through increased knowledge The podcast has over 26,000 downloads.
Karin Glimskär Stålberg, Docent and Senior Consultant, has been the physician in charge of medical management at the tumour surgery unit at the women’s hospital for 12 years. She is praised as indispensable to that organisation. Her research areas span the entire cancer care chain and deal with early diagnosis of gynaecological cancer, consequences of advanced tumour surgery and individualised follow-up after cancer, always aiming to improve care for women with gynaecological cancer. Karin has been lecturing on the medical programme for many years. She now runs a planning group to start a 2-year Clinical Research School for PhD students within Uppsala University/Uppsala Region.
Hans Hagberg, Docent and Senior Consultant, is awarded for his research in advanced T cell therapy for lymphoma, where he has contributed to the most recent medical development. Hans was one of the pioneers in Europe in providing advanced CAR T cell therapy to patients. Without Hans Hagberg’s clinical knowledge, the oncology staff would never have ventured into these novelties. It has been 10 years since the first patient was treated with CAR T cells at Uppsala University Hospital’s oncology clinic.
Mats Martinell, District Physician and Senior Lecturer combined with a position at Region Uppsala, is awarded for his research on facilitating a tailored diabetes treatment through the diabetes study All New Diabetics in Uppsala County (ANDiU). During 2020–2022, Mats was, together with Tove Fall, the lead researcher for CRUSH Covid. CUSH Covid was a unique interdisciplinary research project where Region Uppsala collaborated with researchers from five different research departments at Uppsala University. Mats is the operations representative for the research group in general medicine at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences. Mats has contributed to significant improvements, both in terms of preventing the spread of respiratory viruses and treating diabetes.

About the prize
In 2009, the Regional Executive Board established a research prize for patient-oriented research. Heads of Departments responsible for clinical areas nominate candidates. An external review committee with broad clinical scientific expertise ranks the nominees according to the criteria set by the Regional Executive Board.
Region Uppsala’s prize for achievements in clinical research is awarded and funded by the Regional Executive Board. It consists of four prizes of SEK 10,000 each to employees at Region Uppsala who have contributed to significant improvements in healthcare through their research.
