Horizon Europe – EU's research and innovation framework programme
Horizon Europe is the European Commission’s (EU) research and innovation framework program and runs 2021–2027 and has a budget of 95,5 billion euro.
The four components of the framework programme
Horizon Europe is structured around three pillars covering both frontier research and applied research. It also includes a cross-cutting programme that connects the three pillars and aims to widen participation, spread excellence, and reform and strengthen the European research and innovation system.
Excellent Science (Pillar 1)
Pillar 1 of Horizon Europe strengthens the EU's scientific excellence by supporting frontier research through the European Research Council (ERC), promoting researchers' mobility and career development through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), and investing in world-class research infrastructures.
Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (Pillar 2)
Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe supports collaborative research and innovation projects across six thematic clusters, as well as EU Missions, European Partnerships and the Joint Research Centre (JRC).
