Competence development in generative AI
Generative AI is rapidly transforming the conditions for teaching, assessment and education-related administration. Uppsala University is now taking a coordinated approach to give staff good conditions for using these tools in a purposeful, expedient, and pedagogically and ethically well-grounded way.
In 2025 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor led a working group on Responsible generative AI in education (UFV 2025/595 pdf, 447 kB.), in Swedish. Following the working group’s recommendations, the Unit for Academic Teaching and Learning (UP), University IT Services (UIT) and the Legal Affairs Division offer joint initiatives to support the development of AI literacy across the organization. The collaboration means that questions concerning pedagogy, IT and law are handled in a coordinated manner.
The aim is for teaching staff and course administrators to feel confident in using generative AI in a way that strengthens the quality of education and prepares students for their future professional lives.
One channel for incoming questions
From September 2026, coordinated support is offered through two channels staffed with expertise in generative AI from academic teaching, legal and IT perspectives. You can turn to them with questions concerning, for example, pedagogy, assessment, licenses, agreements, data protection, infrastructure and copyright.

Education at three levels
We will offer education at three levels, adapted to participants' needs and contexts. The sessions are designed with progression – from basic orientation to concrete application, with the aim of improving the conditions for making informed choices about AI in one's own teaching.
1. Introduction
Scope: 2 × 45 min
Target group: Teaching staff and study administrators who want to get started, or who are beginners in using AI tools.
The lecture introduces what generative AI is, how it works and what it can be used for in educational contexts.

2. Continuation lecture
Scope: 2 × 45 min
Target group: Entire staff groups at departments/programmes, particularly teaching staff and course administrators.
The lecture is adapted to the department's subject area and level in consultation with the head of department or director of studies. It provides concrete ideas for how generative AI can be used in teaching, course development and administration.

3. Workshop
Scope: 3 × 45 min
Target group: Entire staff groups at departments/programmes, as a follow-up to the advanced lecture.
The workshop offers an opportunity for practical application 2–4 weeks after the advanced lecture, adapted to participants' own needs and level.
- Themes: getting started with prompting, developing administrative workflows, developing pedagogy, course design or assessment
