Studying abroad
Studying abroad broadens and deepens both your education and your personal experience. It provides you with new knowledge and fresh perspectives on your studies. In today’s globalised world, an exchange is not just a window onto the world – it is a chance to be part of it.
Departmental exchange agreements
The Department of Informatics and Media have exchange agreements with:
- Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic (Media and Communication Studies)
- IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark (Human–Computer Interaction)
For Prague: there are no available places in the spring semester 2026. Applications for the autumn semester 2026 open on 15 January and close on 15 February 2026.
Studies in Prague and Copenhagen
Studies in Prague - MCS
The Department of Informatics and Media has a departmental agreement with Charles University, Prague, where you can study Media and Communication Studies (MCS) at any level. There are two places per year.
- General information on exchange studies at Charles University in Prague
- Courses on offer for exchange students at Charles University in Prague
Important to note: semester dates in Prague differ from those at Uppsala University. Their autumn term (called the winter term) starts and ends later than in Uppsala. The overlap into Uppsala’s spring term is usually not too large, but you must check carefully that the dates fit with your studies in Sweden, both before and after the exchange.
To make the exchange work, you should plan your studies carefully and discuss your plans with the Department before applying.
If you are interested in studying other subjects, you can also apply for an exchange through Uppsala University's Unit for International Mobility. They offer additional exchange opportunities, both in Media and Communication Studies and in other disciplines, at universities worldwide – not just in Europe.
Studies in Copenhagen - Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
The Department of Informatics and Media has an exchange agreement in HCI with the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU). Two places are available each autumn semester.
- General information about exchanges at ITU and courses on offer
- You may choose from the courses open to exchange students. Please note that many courses have specific entry requirements.
Plan your studies and contact Henrik Åhman (henrik.ahman@im.uu.se) to discuss suitable courses for your exchange semester.

How to apply
First, use the MoveOn system to submit your application for nomination. If you are nominated by the Department, you will then be invited to apply directly to the partner university.
Your exchange is only confirmed once the partner university has accepted your application and a learning agreement has been established.
All applications for exchange studies must be submitted via MoveOn.
Application dates will be published at a later stage.
What to include in your application
Your application for exchange studies must be submitted via MoveOn. Complete all required fields and upload the supporting documents listed below.
You must upload:
- an Academic Purpose Statement,
- a summary of credits with highest grades,
- documentation of study-related activities,
- any decision on study breaks (combine these four into one document),
- and a transcript of records.
(1) Your application is for an Erasmus SMS
(2) You may apply to both universities, but you must state your order of preference.
(3a) Academic Purpose Statement (APS): This is the most important part of your application. The statement should be 400–600 words, written in English. It should explain why you want to go on exchange, why you have chosen this university, and how you believe the exchange will benefit your future studies and/or career.
(3b) Summary of credits awarded and higher grades: Based on your transcript of records, provide a summary showing how many credits you have earned, and how many with the highest grades. Specify:
- total number of credits (hp) from Swedish higher education institutions
- number of credits graded VG
- number of credits graded 5
- number of credits graded AB
- number of credits graded A (e.g. from Stockholm university)
- number of credits with Pass/Fail only (G/U)
(3c) Documentation of study related activities: Provide evidence of your involvement as a student representative, or in student associations, unions, or nations.
(3d) Decision of study break: If you have taken a leave of absence from your studies, attach the official decision (available in Uppdok - or equivalent document from the Department).
(4) Transcript of records: Upload a PDF transcript showing the courses you have taken, credits earned, and grades awarded.
(5) English proficiency: If applying for Bremen and you do not hold a Swedish upper-secondary qualification in English, you may need to certify your English skills. For Prague, the Department will confirm your English proficiency.
The selection process
The selection is based equally on (1) grades and (2) the Academic Purpose Statement (APS). A third criterion, (3) involvement in student activities and organisations, may also be taken into account. Students who have already been nominated for an exchange place through the International Office will be given lower priority.
The Department carries out the selection. If applications are judged to be equivalent, additional interviews may be conducted.
Notification of nomination
You will be informed of the nomination (i.e. that the Department will nominate you to a partner university) within a few weeks of submitting your application. The decision will be sent to you by email. You must be available and respond to the offer within the time specified in the notification. If you do not reply in time, the place will be offered to another student.
Declining an exchange offer
If you have been nominated or offered a place but are unable to take part in the exchange, you must contact the Department’s Erasmus+ coordinators as soon as possible.
