Exchange studies via university-wide agreements

Before starting your application, we recommend you to consider the following:

• Does my programme have a free semester where an exchange will fit?
• If I am taking freestanding courses, will an exchange fit into my intended degree?
• Can I find courses abroad that correspond to compulsory courses in my programme/degree?
• Have I earned enough credits at Uppsala University to be flexible with the courses I want to take during the exchange?
• Are the courses I want to study available at the university I want to study at?
• Are my language skills sufficient for the university's language of instruction?
• If I am going to study in a foreign language, will this affect the quality of my learning?
• How many credits do the courses I want to take give?
• If I am not accepted to a particular course at my host university, will I still be able to carry out my planned exchange?
• Will the courses I want to take during the exchange be recognised at Uppsala University?
  
• Does the university I wish to attend have a maximum number of allowed credits, and if so, will this affect my choice of courses?

Now you are ready to review your options in the list of universities available for application.

In the exchange agreement database of the centrally administered exchange agreements, there is important information about, among other things:

• the subjects covered by the agreement and any restrictions
• whether the agreement applies to courses at undergraduate, master or doctoral level
• links to course catalogues
• language of instruction and whether any form of certificate of language skills is required
• academic calendar
• ancillary services such as accommodation, welcome arrangements, etc.
• any additional costs for insurance, etc.
• reports from previous exchange students

Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive this confirmation email, check your spam folder. If you still cannot find it, please contact the International Mobility Support Unit at mobility@uu.se.

If we have any questions regarding your application, we will contact you within 1–2 weeks after the application deadline. It is important that you check your email (including your spam folder) and phone during this period.

Selection

Students conducting their exchange as part of their current degree programme and intend to credit courses from their exchange will be given priority in the selection process. Priority will also be given to students who:

• have not previously participated in an exchange
• have not already accepted another exchange programme offered by Uppsala University
• have not notified their withdrawal after the response time to an exchange place via the Unit for International Mobility

All applications are sorted by selection group, top grades, meritorious assignments and lottery numbers. For students who can only obtain a G/U grade within their programmes, a lottery is held instead of calculating top grades. Places are then allocated. As we have many applicants, everyone needs to be given a lottery number so that those who end up in the same place on the list can be ranked.

We have up to three selection rounds. Most places are allocated in selection round 1. In round 2, places that students have declined in round 1 are allocated. A third selection round may be held for universities that still have places available. Only applicants who have indicated they are open to considering universities other than those to which they have applied to are offered the opportunity to submit new course proposals.

Allocation of places

You will be notified by email approximately four weeks after the final application date whether or not you have been offered a place. If you receive an offer, you will have about one week to accept or decline it. Please note that failure to respond within the specified time limit will be considered a rejection.

Anyone who rejects an offer will be removed from the application process. Therefore, it is not possible to reject an offer and remain on the reserve list for another university. Similarly, is it not possible to accept an offer and still remain on the reserve list for a higher-ranked choice.

1. You will receive an email from the Unit for International Mobility with information about the next stage in the application process. Read all instructions carefully and meet the deadlines.
2. You will receive an invitation to attend a pre-application meeting with the Unit for International Mobility to learn more about applying to the host university.
3. Your assigned coordinator will contact you within 1–3 months. As the universities' deadlines for nomination and application vary, each coordinator will contact their students in turn.
4. Before applying to your host university, review your course choices again. Contact your department if you need guidance on credit transfer.
5. If your exchange is eligible for a grant, you will receive information about the grant application by email.
6. Once the host university has received and processed your application, you will receive an admission notice (usually sent directly to you digitally). The processing time for applications varies greatly between host universities. Please note that it is always the host university that decides who is admitted to its courses, and that at some universities, course selections are not made until the start of the semester.

Once you have received your admission letter, it is time to apply for a visa (if needed), accommodation, check your insurance coverage, etc.

You will be invited to attend a pre-departure meeting with the Unit for International Mobility, where you will receive more practical information about your exchange and meet other outgoing students.
