Expenses and grants

Although exchange studies do not involve any additional tuition fees, there may still be other costs. This page provides information on fees, grant opportunities and funding options for your exchange studies.

Expenses and other costs

You will not be required to pay tuition fees to the host university during your exchange studies. However, if you are a fee-paying student, you will continue to pay tuition fees to Uppsala University during your exchange.

Travel costs are always an additional expense. Depending on the cost of living in your host country, the cost of accommodation, food and course materials may be cheaper, more expensive or similar to what you are used to in Sweden.

Some of our partner universities require an internationally recognised language test result. Such tests can cost thousands of kronor.

Some partner universities require additional insurance and/or mandatory administrative fees. If this is the case, it will be stated under the headings ‘Insurance’ and ‘Fees’ in the agreement description for each university in our exchange agreement database.

Additional costs may be associated with the visa application, but these can vary considerably. Some examples include a medical examination, X-rays, vaccinations, certificate translation and language tests. Some countries require you to provide a bank statement showing that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your studies. The USA is one such country.

Tip! Our former exchange students usually write about their experiences of costs and managing their finances in their exchange reports. Exchange reports can be found under the ‘Exchange report’ tab for each university in the exchange agreement database.

Student finance and grants

If you are eligible for student finance from CSN (the Swedish Board of Student Finance), you can apply for it for your exchange studies as well. Find out more on CSN’s page about student finance for studying outside Sweden. Grants listed on this page can generally be combined with student finance from CSN.

Many of our exchange places qualify for study and travel grants, primarily at universities within Europe.

The Erasmus grant

Erasmus+ is a well-known exchange programme funded by the European Commission. If you are eligible for an Erasmus grant for studies or Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility, we will contact you.

Erasmus Grant for Studies

Uppsala University has numerous agreements for exchange studies with universities in Europe in the so-called programme countries within Erasmus+. Anyone who is accepted for exchange studies at such a partner institution may apply for the Erasmus Grant for Studies.

Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility grant

Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) is a grant programme that enables us to award grants for exchange studies at a selection of partner universities in countries outside the EU.

Additional funding for inclusion or green travel

In addition to the Erasmus grant for studies, there is also the opportunity to apply for inclusion support and support for sustainable travel.
