More routes to international opportunities
There are several ways to gain international experience during your studies – both at home and abroad. Here you can find opportunities to get involved, meet students from around the world and broaden your perspectives.
Become a Buddy for international students
Through Uppsala Student Union and Gotland Student Union Rindi, you can get involved by helping incoming international students feel welcome and at home in Uppsala or Visby.
In Uppsala, you can become a Buddy for international students through the International Buddy Programme. In Visby, you can become a so-called Shepherd during the welcome days, which are also known as the Lamning. You can also participate in Rindi's language café.
If you have a certificate that you have participated as a Buddy or Shepherd, or as host at Rindi's language café, you can be rewarded with priority in the application for exchange studies.
International opportunities at home
Not all students have the opportunity or interest to take part in international activities abroad. At Uppsala University, there are also options for engaging with the world from home – without travelling physically.
A great way to meet international students from around the world is to get involved in student activities. Take on a role in a student association, a nation, or one of the student unions.
Do you want to welcome new international students?
Kuratorskonventet is the cooperative body for Uppsala's thirteen student nations. Kuratorskonventet has a sub-convention called the International Committee whose task is to welcome new international students.
Do you want to meet international students?
Within the student unions, there are communities or assignments where you can get involved. Gotland's student union Rindi functions both as a student union and a student nation. In Uppsala, there are 13 student nations that offer everything from sports teams to choirs.
Do you want to develop your language skills?
The Department of Scandinavian Languages, the Department of English and the Language Workshop offer courses in both Swedish and English for those who want to develop their language skills. The Language Workshop also organizes courses in English specifically aimed at international students.

Do you want to study International courses and programmes?
In the course catalogue, you can explore the international distance courses offered by the university. If you are interested in pursuing a full programme, you can explore the international Bachelor's or Master's programmes offered in Uppsala or Visby. These programmes allow you to study locally alongside students from all around the world.

Studying abroad independently
If you are interested in studying at an institution that is not part of Uppsala University’s exchange agreements, it is possible to arrange studies abroad independently, as a so-called “freemover”
You need to start well in advance to gather information, submit your application and pay any tuition fees. In these cases, Uppsala University does not offer individual guidance.
Start by visiting Studera.nu, which lists important things to consider. To find further information about studying abroad, you can use country-specific websites such as “Study in Germany” or “Study in Japan”. Embassies, consulates and various organisations linked to education in the respective country can also be valuable sources of information.
