Student unions

A student union is an organisation run for students, by students. The student unions work to meet the interests of students, both by pursuing issues that affect the quality of education and also in the form of student social activities. The student unions' main task is to represent you as a student throughout the university, at a local level, up to meetings with the vice-chancellor and the deputy vice-chancellor.

The student unions are staffed by elected representatives, all of whom are also students who work part-time or full-time with union activities to ensure that your time at the university is the best possible.

Your union affiliation largely depends on the field of study in which your course or programme is provided. Each student union represents different organisational parts of the university, but you are free to be a member of multiple unions.

In Uppsala, there are also several student nations. Read more about the nations!

Become a member

You can register as a member of a student union either by visiting them during reception hours or by contacting them by email or telephone. More information about how this works and about reception hours can be found on the respective student union's website.

The membership card for all student unions and nations is the Mecenat. This can also be called a "kårleg" or "nationskort". The Mecenat card also gives you access to student discounts and serves as student identification when, for example, you buy bus tickets with a student discount.

Get involved!

Representatives for the unions are active in several decision-making bodies at the University. Check out available assignments at your student union!
