About the course
The course recapitulates types of language change and models of language relationship from a historical perspective, including the comparative method and subgrouping. The course further treats computational approaches to cognate identification, glottochronology and formal models of lexical substitution. In addition to that, parsimony and maximum likelihood inference, tree search strategies and related overfitting and modeling-inference concerns are introduced.
