Decisions and guidelines
The programme comprises two years of full-time studies, but students may choose to conclude their studies after one year, taking a one-year Master's degree. After the first year the programme leads to a one-year Master's degree in the subject/major field the student has chosen. The second year leads to a two-year Master's degree in the same subject/main field of study. All departments (or equivalents) at the Faculty of Arts are participating in the programme.
Entry requirements
Classical Archaeology and Ancient History
Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities or social sciences.
Also required is 60 credits in classical archaeology and ancient history.
Language requirements
All applicants need to verify English language proficiency that corresponds to English studies at upper secondary (high school) level in Sweden ("English 6"). This can be done in a number of ways, including through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, or through previous upper secondary (high school) or university studies.
The minimum test scores are:
- IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
- TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90

Egyptology

Aesthetics

History of Science and Ideas
Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities or social sciences.
Also required is:
- 60 credits in history of ideas and science; or
- 90 credits in history or economic history.
Students with a Degree of Master of Science in Sociotechnical Systems Engineering including an independent academic work in history of ideas and science are also eligible.

Art History
Academic requirements

Cultural Heritage and Sustainability
Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.
Also required is 60 credits in conservation, history preservation, cultural heritage management, archaeology, heritage studies, architecture, cultural economics, art history, museology, curating, history, anthropology, cultural heritage law, community planning, or a similar field of study.

Theoretical Philosophy

Aims
The aim of the programme is:
- for students to acquire a good capacity for analysis,
- for students to deepen their knowledge of the humanities subjects included in the programme’s specialisations,
- for students to acquire the knowledge required to be eligible for research-level education,
- for students to be provided with the capability to address advanced assignments in various parts of the job market.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the programme students will be able to:
- independently carry out investigations in various parts of working life,
- critically apply advanced theories and methods from various disciplines in the arts and social sciences,
- independently present findings from both research and investigations in correct speech and writing,
- with good insight gather and deal with complex materials with relevance to various investigations,
- independently formulate, delimit, and execute a research project of relevance to various subject areas,
- express themselves effectively in speech and writing and write not only correctly but also with stylistic and argumentational awareness.
Layout of the programme
The programme comprises two years. The first year of studies leads to a one-year Master's degree. The second year of studies leads to a two-year Master's degree.
The programme includes courses, degree projects, and traineeships. Courses are normally worth 7.5 credits and are given at a half-time rate in one of the four periods that make up the academic year. Each major field/specialisation includes obligatory courses. Furthermore, students select a number of elective single-subject courses from the advanced-level offerings of the entire Faculty.
The following degree projects are included:
- Degree project for two-year Master's degree 1, 45 credits.
- Degree project for two-year Master's degree 2, 20 credits.
- Degree project for two-year Master's degree 3, 15 credits.
- Degree project for one-year Master's degree, 30 credits.
Students intending to complete two years of study choose the degree project for the two-year Master's degree, 45 credits, with the exception of students who intend to complete two years of study and specialise in Egyptology. The latter students choose the degree project for two year Master's degree 2, 30 credits. Students intending to conclude their studies after one year with a one-year Master's degree choose the degree project for the one-year Master's degree, 30 credits. Students who already have a one-year Master's degree choose the degree project for the two-year Master's degree 2, 15 credits.
Progression in the programme
The programme belongs to the advanced level. Progression within the programme is expressed in the various degree projects, for either one-year or two-year Master's degrees.
Courses included in the programme
Each specialisation/major field has its own obligatory courses. Elective single-subject courses are also included. Information about courses is given in the syllabus for each respective specialisation.
Transitional regulations
Students entering the programme in the second year and who have a one-year Master's degree older than from 2007 should check whether they meet the requirements for receiving a two-year Master's degree.

Instruction is given in the courses included in the programme. Work with degree projects is individually supervised. See the respective course syllabuses for further information.
Degree
A one-year or two-year Master's degree (60 or 120 credits respectively) in one of the subjects at the Faculty.
