Entry requirements

Academic requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.

Also required is 60 credits in musicology.

Language requirements

Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Aims

The aim of the programme is to give students the possibility to develop their knowledge of musicology with regard to understanding, skills and ability, in accordance with the Swedish Higher education ordinance, in such a way that they upon graduation are well prepared for qualified professional activity in the field of music and for further scholarship and research.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

For the degree of Master of Arts the student must:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field of musicology, including both broad understanding and considerable in-depth learning in certain parts an aspects of the discipline, as well as deepened knowledge in current musicological research.
  • demonstrate broad and considerable in-depth knowledge concerning musicological methods, theories, concepts and research problems.

Skill and ability

For the degree of Master of Arts the student must:

  • demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate musicological knowledge, and to analyze, assess and handle complex questions, theories and results in the field. The student must be able to explain and critically assess musicological theories and concepts based on literature and current research, as well as to present and evaluate perspectives, arguments and conclusions in musicological research independently and critically. 
  • demonstrate the ability to correctly present the results, in speaking and writing, from both their own research and that of others, and to discuss and communicate the theoretical perspectives, methods, research questions and conclusions upon which this research is founded.
  • demonstrate the ability to independently, creatively and reflexively identify and formulate research questions, and to plan and execute - with adequate methods - qualified tasks within given time frames. In their dissertations the students will independently and innovatively have formulated, demarcated and completed a research task in the form of a scholarly thesis.
  • demonstrate such skill that is needed to participate in research and development work, individually or in a group, or to operate in other qualified work in the music and culture sector, individually or in a group.

Evaluation and approach

For the degree of Master of Arts the student must:

  • demonstrate the ability to make evaluations in the field of music, in respect to relevant issues of source criticism, problematised and ethical aspects, and to demonstrate awareness concerning ethical and societal aspects on research and development work.
  • demonstrate insight into the potentials, consequences and limitations of academic musicology and the humanities, including their role in society, as well as the ability to reflect on responsibility researchers have concerning the interpretation, communication and reception of their research.  
  • demonstrate awareness and ability to identify needs for further knowledge and widened perspectives, both as regards the field in general and for their own use.

Layout of the programme

The programme consists of two years of study and leads to a Master of Arts degree. The first-year courses may lead to a one-year master degree. There is also a possibility to build on a previous one-year master degree to complete a two-year Master of Arts degree.

The programme comprises compulsory courses, elective courses and a dissertation. Within the portion of elective courses there is also the possibility of professional work placement or participating in international exchange by taking courses at universities within the exchange programme of partner universities of Uppsala University.

The programme leads to a two-year Master of Arts degree in Music (120 hp).
