Aims

The programme aims to give the students an education that prepares them for work within the games industry, as self-employed developers or for a continued academic career within the subjects Game design and Expression in convergent media.

Learning outcomes

For a bachelor degree, the student should:

Knowledge and understanding

  • show knowledge and understanding of games and game design as an interactive form of culture and means of communication, including the scientific base of the subject area
  • explain and critically analyse external factors that influence the development within game design and expression in convergent media, with an emphasis on level design
  • demonstrate knowledge of available methods in game design and level design
  • show an ability to orient themselves within recent research- and professional issues, in both game and level design.

Competence and skills

  • independently identify, formulate and solve problems as well as perform tasks within given time frames
  • communicate in an accessible and clarifying way in both speech and writing, with good transparency and a high degree of problematization
  • be able to account for questions and issues tied to game- and level design verbally and in writing, as well as be able to adjust their communication for different target audiences
  • individually and in groups, identify and formulate questions, as well as seek and gather information
  • use their knowledge about game- and level design in a broader scientific, cultural and societal perspective
  • show ability to search, collect, assess and critcally interpret relevant information in an inquiry and be able to critically discuss phenonmena, research questions and situations.

Judgement and approach

  • show ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary project groups and evaluate their own work
  • display progression in their scientific approach, and show ability to identify their own need for more knowledge and developed competence
  • critically value scientific argumentation with the help of fundamental theory and methods within game design
  • show broad knowledge within the scientific and professional areas which problematize games and game design’s role in the context of society and ethics, as well as show insight in the role of knowledge within the human society, and people´s responsibility for how to use it
  • show ability to assess gamedesign in regard to relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects.

Layout of the programme

Year 1 (semester 1-2):

Students are introduced to the subjects of game design and level design through practical development of simple games as well as game environments and interactive storytelling. The students are also introduced to broader game design theory as well as academic studies and scientific approach.

Year 2 (semester 3-4):

Students deepen their understanding of game design by studying systems theory, as well as work on more comprehensive projects in which these skills are applied during game development. In parallel, studies in level design are advanced as students develop more complex game environments and learn to use additional tools. Among other things, students will explore fundamental principles of architecture in order to apply them digitally within the field of level design.

Year 3 (semester 5-6):

The programme’s fifth semester is comprised of 30 credits elective courses. The students may then apply for courses in game design, level design or other subjects. The students may apply for a full semester (30 c) internship or studies abroad. The last and sixth semester is comprised of one elective course (7.5 c), one theory and methods course (7.5 c) and the Bachelor Degree Project course (15 c).

Degree

The programme leads to a Bachelor of Arts with Game Design as main field of study.
