Is this programme right for you?

Tobias, student.

Meet a student on the programme

Name: Toby Hensel
From: Switzerland

I really enjoy studying, so I want to do it for as long as possible! If the opportunity for a PhD comes, I want to be ready to grab it.

How did you choose your programme?
– I have a background in physics, but I really wanted to do something more applied where I can actually build something and do practical work. I found this programme and after reading the syllabus, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

What is it like to be an international student?
– It's great! It’s an incredibly international city so every person you meet has a completely different story to tell. There are a ton of options to get to know people through the student nations, housing, and honestly just walking down the street.

What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– Tough question! I would have to say the layout of the faculties. The entire city has small (and big) buildings all belonging to the University, so there is no clear delamination between the University and the city. That way you can just go for a walk through the city during the lunch break and be back at the university in five minutes.

Do you remember your first impression of Uppsala? Please tell us!
– I specifically remember it being incredibly hot! I arrived in August during the heat wave dressed in full winter gear as I thought it would be freezing...I was wrong. I ended up reading my book outside for the rest of the month in my swim shorts and a T-shirt!

Name three things you are doing this week!
– Tonight I´m going to a pub quiz! Every week I go climbing with my friends at the gym, and this weekend there is also a massive volleyball tournament where the best teams in Sweden play off for a chance to play in the European league.

What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– I really enjoy studying, so I want to do it for as long as possible! If the opportunity for a PhD comes, I want to be ready to grab it.

Describe the student life
– There are so many things to experience; the parties are great and frequent, the cafes are cute and cosy, but I think my favourite experience was borrowing snowboards from the "fritidsbank" (municipal library for sports gear) and learning with friends on a tiny slope five minutes from my room. We were terrible.

Three quick questions
What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– The botanical gardens! During summer they are beautiful, and during winter they are warm.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
– Hopefully still here studying for my PhD! Otherwise, working as an engineer!

Where is the best place to study?
– Absolutely, without a doubt, the study space under Ekonomikum. It’s like nothing you have ever seen.

Spring 2024.
