Greek

As a student of Greek, you study mainly literature but also other types of texts from the entire ancient period from the perspective of linguistics, literature and cultural history. Early on, Greek was diffused from the mother country in different directions, and several dialects can be distinguished. Some of them came to be associated with different literary genres. Greek culture and language spread mainly across the eastern Mediterranean but also reached Rome and the western parts of the growing Roman Empire, where Greek became the language of the cultural elite.
The first Greek courses concentrate on Classical Attic, the language of Plato and the tragedians. Later on, other types of Greek are introduced. These studies provide first-hand knowledge of literature that stands at the beginning of the Western tradition and continues to be a productive force in our culture. They also provide knowledge of a world of thought that forms the starting point for the development of modern science.
Studies in Greek also provide useful and sometimes necessary basic and framework knowledge for the study of other subjects, such as theology, philosophy, historical linguistics and literature. Prior knowledge of general grammar facilitates the initial study of Greek.
