Entry requirements

Students admitted to any of one or two year Master programme within humanities and social sciences or with a B.A exam in humanities or social sciences.

Learning outcomes

After accomplishing the course the student is expected to:

-Possess an in-depth understanding of central concepts and processes of segregation, exclusion and inclusion.

-Be able to implement ethnographic methods in applied multicultural contexts.

-Be able to analyse and turn empirical data into reports and proposals that foster processes of inclusion.

-Improved skills to co-operate with practitioners

Content

The objective of the course is to use ethnography as a method to work with pluralism, multiculturalism and integration in practical and applied contexts. The course will provide tools for working with multiculturalism in state organisations, municipalities and NGOs as to address issues of how to discover and address various forms of discrimination. The interface of multiculturalism and gender will be highlighted. While examples will be mainly drawn from present-day Sweden, examples from other countries will be used to deepen the comparative understanding of multiculturalism.

Teaching:

The course is comprised of one or more of the following forms: lectures, seminars, field practise and/or counselling. Language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The examination will be in one or more of the following forms: home exam, memo writing, group work, active seminar participation and/or oral exam.
