General provisions

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to scientific methodology and stimulate a scientific working method in the daily healthcare.

Entry requirements

For admission to the course, basic eligibility for university studies and special eligibility for higher education within the field of health care are required.

Learning outcomes

After completed course, the student should:

- be able to search, evaluate and interpret information from different databases to be able to choose diagnostic- and therapeutic methods according to best evidence:

- be able to plan projects with primarily clinical implications

- have good understanding in basic statistical methods

- understand research-ethical issues

- be able to write an application to the Regional Ethical Review Board and to carry out research under supervision;

- be able to present scientific information to different professionals within healthcare, both as scientific reports, and as posters to convey new knowledge in healthcare.

Medical development based on scientific results

The structure of the scientific article

During seminars read a scientific article and learn critical analysis

To write a scientific article

Study designs in clinical research

To write a project plan

Personal data in research, regulatory frameworks

Basic statistical methods including epidemiology

To find, read, interpret, and write scientific reports

Training to find evidence-based information from the web

Training to design posters

Ethics in clinical research including application procedure to the Regional Ethical Review Board

Instruction

The course is given on part-time. The education is performed through lectures, seminars, practical work under supervision in computer laboratories, both individually and in groups. Scheduled teaching Wednesdays (afternoon).

Assessment

To pass the course, participation in lectures, seminars and scheduled practical training are required. Examination is arranged as written and oral presentation of the project and as a written examination.

As grades is used passed or failed.

Other directives

The course is a separate course given by the Centre for Clinical Research in V?ster?s and aimed for professional within health care.
