Learning outcomes

Sub-course 1: Method and statistical analysis, library science and report writing 7.5 higher education credits

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

· search scholarly literature in computer libraries

· use established rules (APA-manual) when reporting of scholarly data

· evaluate statistical methods based on their assumptions about data structure

· choose between advanced parametric methods and use these to carry out calculations and interpretations on given amounts of data

Module 3 Scientific work, 15 higher education credits

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

· distinguish and formulate a scholarly problem

· choose research design and statistical method in relation to problem

· compile, analyse and interpret collected data in relation to a problem

· in seminars independently evaluate and discuss a submitted academic paper

· as the author of the thesis and as an opponent, evaluate and discuss one's own and others' essays

Content

The course intends to provide advanced knowledge in, and experience of, the different parts of empirical psychological research and scholarly authorship. It should further give advanced knowledge and skills pertaining to statistical analysis of psychological data and give training to review scholarly texts critically. The general aims of the course are to prepare for activities within psychological research and psychological diagnostic work. Additionally, advanced study or broadening within psychology based on choice. The course consists of three modules.

Sub-course 1: Method and statistical analysis, library science and report writing

The module presents different research methods and their application within psychology and shows the uses of statistical analysis for description and inference in primarily experimental designs where both variance analysis as well as regression analysis are treated. As a support for the scholarly work, are instructions for writing and design of scholarly reports and in library science.

Sub-course 2: Elective module

The course can be acquired in two ways. By choosing a course that already is given at the department, or the student or a group of students chooses a field within which they want to specialise. In the latter case, a proposal is prepared together with an appropriate teacher for a study plan which should be established by course directors before the start of the module. The plan should contain aim, contents, goals, teaching, examination, further instructions and reading list.

Sub-course 3: Scientific work

At the course introduction, the students choose a subject area within which they under supervision plan, carry out and report independent scholarly work. The work runs in parallel with the teaching during the entire course. The completed work is presented in an essay (Bachelor's thesis) that be ventilated during a final seminar with faculty examiner. Scholarly work also includes participation in essay seminars. Participation in essay seminars implies attendance at essay seminars and to publicly discuss a Bachelor's thesis. Each student should publicly discuss at least one Bachelor's thesis and be present at at least 75 % of the essay seminars that are announced during the semester.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of teaching sessions, group work, seminars, study visits and supervision.

Assessment

The module Method and Statistical Analysis is examined at a written, individual test and participation in compulsory tasks according to the instructions of teacher. Library science and report writing are examined through compulsory attendance and tasks according to the instructions of teacher. The essay is graded by the examiner. The grades in the course are passed with distinction, passed and failed.

For a passing grade in the course, "passed" results in the three modules are required. In order to receive the grade "pass with distinction" on the course, the essay and one of the modules Method and Statistical Analysis or the elective module must pass with distinction, and one must have at least a passing grade on the remaining module.

The elective module is examined according to the course syllabus of the chosen course.
