Learning outcomes

After a successfully completed course the student should be able to:

  • describe general properties for different materials,
  • describe typical materials manufacturing and processing methods,
  • describe general design limits for different materials,
  • use IT based information sources to search and find material properties,
  • execution of a materials selection process for a simple construction case.

Content

The course deals with materials from all material classes, such as wood, stone, concrete, metals, alloys, plastics, rubber, ceramics, glass, composite materials, powder materials and textiles. For the various materials, characteristic properties are raised, for example, mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical and chemical properties. Typical uses of different materials are reviewed in the reverse: for which reason one made a choice of materials for specific constructions.

Typical manufacturing methods (casting, pressing, extrusion, sintering, etc.), machining methods (turning, milling, drilling, threading, pressing, bending, etc.), surface treatment methods (grinding, blasting, surface coating, etc.) and joining methods (bonding, welding soldering, etc.) are presented as well as their importance for the performance of the finished product.

In addition, there are examples of how information retrieval of materials can be done on the Internet and how purchasing of materials can be done.

Instruction

Lectures, assignments, laboratory work.

A material selection project with written report is included, in which the student should submit proposals for materials and appropriate treatments or methods for any design whose requirements profile and tolerances should be matched with the material's characteristics and price.

Assessment

Execution and presentation of laboratory and homework assignments. Written examination of basic concepts. Written report and oral presentation of the material selection project
