General provisions

The course is given in semester 4 in the Radiology technician programme.

Entry requirements

Passed courses from semester 2 as well as 15 credits passed courses in semester 3 including passed placement.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course consisting of clinical practice in emergency care i.e. emergency reception, emergency department and intensive care units, the student is expected to be able to understand and describe and also be able to

- basic principles of general and specific nursing of acute/critically ill patient

- apply methods for supervision, observations, controls and assessments in nursing of acute/critically ill patient

- start acute treatment at acute or onset situations

- on an empathetic and professional attitude be able to respond to and listen to acute/critically ill patient

- observe symptoms and treatment effects

- handle drugs and observe effects/adverse drug reactions

- manage certain equipment such a oxygen mask, suck, saturation meter etc that are used for acute patients

- apply hospital hygienic principles

- apply statutes and safety routines

- notice, confirm and analyse pain as well as initiate measures

- participate in preparation and implementation of transports of acute ill patients to and from the radiology department

Content

- application of the phases of the nursing process

- documentation

- observations, controls, measurements, assessments as well as general and specific nursing of acute/critically ill patient

- monitoring and assessment of vital functions

- Drug processing, drug dosage, observations of effects and adverse drug reactions

- participation in rounds as well as diagnostics and treatment of acute diseases

- observation of symptoms and therapy effects at acute diseases

- study and presentation of patient case

- ethical and cultural aspects in nursing

- application of statutes, hygienic principles and safety routines.

Instruction

The student should seek and apply knowledge based on science and evidence.

STUDIES

Placement with organised supervision, clinical/practical proficiency training, group assignment, lecture, study assignments with oral presentation/seminars.

Placement can be located also on evenings and weekends.

COMPULSORY PARTS

Introduction to course, placement, assignments individually or in groups and seminars.

Assessment

Active participation in the placement.

Passed study assignments and seminars as well as passed clinical/practical skills located during the placement.
