Learning outcomes

After this course, the students should be able to:

  • recognise, model and simulate different types of variable energy sources (focus on solar and wind),
  • recognise, model and simulate power converters used to connect the variable sources to the grid,
  • analyse, model and simulate basic control strategies required for grid connection,
  • implement a complete system, including power sources, converters, control, storage and grid,
  • use methods to quantify spatial and temporal variability of renewable energy sources and smoothing effects of geographically widespread production,
  • master technical solutions for dealing with large proportions of variable power production in the power system.

Content

Standards for Integration of renewables to the distribution system, Distributed generation, Microgrids / Energy Storage, Solar Power Systems, Wind Power Systems, Wave Power Systems, Power Converters for Grid Integration, Control strategies. Spatial and temporal variability of different variable sources

Instruction

Lectures and Lab/simulation exercises.

Assessment

Oral presentation and discussion of scientific articles (1 credit). Complete simulation exercise presented in class and delivered together with a written report(3 credits). Lab exercises (1 credit).
