60 credits in a subject within the educational sciences, the humanities or social sciences
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
- formulate a scientific research question relevant to studies of education
- select suitable methods and approaches in order to answer scientific research questions
- collect and account for data relevant for a number of research methods, and demonstrate knowledge of how collected data can be analysed
- relate methods to different traditions within the philosophy of science
- account for the different steps in the research process and the relation between them
- discuss ethical considerations relevant to different choices of methods
- search for literature in a limited field of research
Content
Introduction to the philosophy of science. Introduction to qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and data analysis, of relevance for studies in education. Research design and the research process. Search of literature, relevant for studies in education. Research ethics, source criticism and source referencing.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars and workshops.
Assessment
Written and oral examination.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of a special reason may be a certificate regarding special pedagical support from the University's disability coordinator.
