Learning outcomes

The course provides specialisation and advanced insight into Hindi. Beyond that, the course provides for a basic knowledge in Sanskrit and an understanding of the development of the New-Indo-Aryan Languages. Furthermore, the course aims to provide the student with a certain independence in carrying out and present a study of an issue relating to Hindi.

To receive the grade Pass the student must at least:

Module 1:

  • be able to account for the place of Sanskrit among Indian languages and its unique position among them;
  • be able to read, write and transcribe Devanagari;
  • master passive Sandhi and actively Sanskrit basic inflection- and word-formation morphology;
  • have a basic knowledge of the syntax of Sanskrit;
  • be able to analyse (passive) simple Sanskrit opinions;
  • be able to translate (with dictionary) simple texts from Sanskrit to Swedish on a reasonable stylistic level.

Module 2:

  • master the Hindi grammar in full;
  • account for the main dialects of Hindi;
  • be able to read texts that belong different literary genres;
  • have the ability to account for the development of Hindi at a general level from a historical perspective.

Module 3:

  • write a minor essay or a short academic paper over a selected issue, and then under supervision carry out a short study on a selected issue within the main field of study; under supervision identify relevant and appropriate secondary literature, and read and make correct reviews of relevant parts of this literature; present the results of this study in an essay structured on the basis of the issue itself, the results and the arguments in the study, written in grammatically correct prose and with correct treatment of the technical terminology; follow established formal conventions regarding structure and typography and quoting and referring to sources correctly; orally present and discuss the study for an audience of students of an equivalent level.

Content

The course consists of three modules:

Module 1

Introduction in Sanskrit, 7.5 credits

Module 2

Hindi Text and Grammar, 15 credits

Module 3. Special Project, 7.5 credits

A short essay or minor essay is normally included as part of the course.

Instruction

The course consists of lectures, exercises and examination. The student's independent learning activities are of crucial importance to the work on the course.

Assessment

The examination is through ongoing oral and written tests during the class hours, and through a written exam at the end of course 1-3 and the submission of an essay and seminary (oral defence) in course 4.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other directives

The course may not be included in a higher education qualification as independent course if parts of it is also part of another course that is included in a higher education qualification.
