The course is given in Persian C (5JR315), Bachelor's Programme in Oriental Studies, semester 3, specialisation Persian, and as a freestanding course.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able, at a minimum, to

• give a general account of the development of New Persian literature in its historical context from about 900 CE onward,
• describe different types of classical Persian poetry,
• give an account of the life and literary works of four major classical Persian poets,
• give an account of different genres in classical Persian prose and name important works in different genres,
• describe the emergence of modern Persian prose,
• give an account of new trends in modern Persian poetry,
• describe the life and literary works of the most important modern Persian authors,
• analyse the role of Persian literature in contemporary Iranian society,
• give an account of important themes in Persian oral literature.

Content

The course aims to give an introduction to authors, genres and epochs in classical and modern Persian literature.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures and literary seminars in which Persian literature (read in English or Swedish translation) is discussed.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components

1. Written examination

2. Oral presentation

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is required in component 1 and Pass in component 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree together with Persian C (5JR315).
