Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree and Scientific Computing III, 5 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • in English summarise scientific papers in the field of scientific computing;
  • clearly and with a correct terminology, present a research area in scientific computing both verbally and in writing;
  • identify and discuss standard approaches to scientific research methodology in scientific computing;
  • discuss social and ethical implications of the scientific research work in scientific computing.

Content

Through the course structure, the student will come in contact with researchers at the department and gain insight into research and research methodology in general and particularly into research in scientific computing. Special attention is given to social and ethical aspects of the research. The course includes practice in oral and written presentation and in reading scientific articles.

Instruction

Classes mainly in a tutorial format, with a researcher in scientific computing that serve as a coach and supervisor. Teaching in oral and written presentation.

Assessment

Writing a review article covering a research theme in scientific computing, with an appendix where research ethical and social issues related to the research theme is discussed. This will also include reference searching. Oral presentation of the content in the review article and the appendix.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
