Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the basics of geographic information systems (GIS) and related areas such as geodesy and remote sensing
  • select and acquire both primary and secondary spatial data for use in GIS
  • manage, and analyse digital data in raster and vector formats
  • describe how common analytical methods and techniques work
  • create and present a GIS project.

Content

The course covers various aspects of Geoinformatics such as coordinate systems and projections, spatial data models and their structure, spatial database technology, data supply for geographic information systems: digital maps, digitizing, and surveying with geodetic instruments, basic cartographic methodology, basic geodesy; basic remote sensing, thematic classification of multispectral data.

Instruction

The course is given in the form of lectures, exercises and seminars. The course also includes a problem oriented project work which may be done in small groups. Subject-related communications training with feedback and evaluation are included in the course.

Assessment

The course is assessed with a written examination (6 credits) and exercises (2 credits) and project work (2 credits).
