Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to deepen and broaden the ability to analyze Arabic texts, primarily prose texts.

For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to

  • translate selected texts in a way that shows methodological awareness;
  • carry out a linguistic analysis of the selected texts with regard to modern linguistic methods;
  • interpret the selected texts within their historical and literary context;
  • make a scholarly relevant summary of the linguistic and literary characteristics of the texts;
  • discuss the relationship between language and the understanding of gender.

Content

Reading about 150 standard pages of text in the original language.

Instruction

Teaching consists of tutoring.

Assessment

Examinatory seminars with compulsory attendance. Exceptions can be made for two seminars. Substitution by submission of a special written assignment for non-attendance at more than two seminars is not accepted. In addition, the student submits a written in-depth assignment (PM) on the entire novel. The essay can have a literary or linguistic focus and covers 10-15 pages. The standard of the essay must be such that it can be ventilated in a seminar.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other directives

The course may not be included in the degree as a freestanding course if the corresponding part has been studied in another course included in the degree.
