The course is given as a freestanding course.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree with Turkish as the main field of study, including an independent project worth at least 15 credits.

Learning outcomes

The course is intended to give skills in Old Turkic and an ability to analyse texts.

To earn the grade Pass, on completion of the course students must at least be able to:

- give an account of the periods and language groups of Old Turkic;

- give an account of sources of the Runiform inscriptions, Old Uigur and Karakhanid;

- read, transcribe and translate selected Old Turkic texts;

- describe the Old Turkic writing systems and their palaeographic features;

- describe the grammar and vocabulary of Old Turkic;

- describe cultural, religious and linguistic relations in regions where Old Turkic was used.

Content

The course gives an introduction to the periods, languages, writing systems and palaeography of Old Turkic. Furthermore, the course gives skills in reading, transcribing, analysing and translating chosen texts. Furthermore, the course aims to give an overview of cultural, religious and linguistic relations in regions where Old Turkic was used.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. Students' own learning activities are crucial for their work during the course.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components:

1. continuous oral and written assignments;

2. take-home examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the university disability coordinator.

Other directives

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent components have been studied in another course included in the degree.
