Entry requirements
120 credits in science/engineering including Solid Mechanics, Numerical Analysis and Linear Algebra. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide a systematic approach to numerically solve simpler problems in e.g. material mechanics, stationary heat conduction and other physical phenomena.
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- apply the concept of elastic stored energy to analyse deformations and forces in linearly elastic bodies,
- identify degrees of freedom and boundary conditions in a discrete elastic system and solve them by matrix methods,
- formulate the FE equations with weak form / virtual work principle for various problems that can be described with partial differential equations and give a physical interpretation of the different input terms,
- apply FE to solve 1D or 2D problems in linearly elastic material mechanics, stationary heat conduction and other simpler physical phenomena,
- implement simple FE solvers in Matlab.
Content
Energy methods, strong and weak formulation for analysis of physical field problems. Approximate approaches for the finite element method (FE) and the residual method. One- and two-dimensional isoparametric elements. Formulation of FE equations and their implementation in Matlab. Solution of simpler problems in material mechanics using the implemented FE algorithms in Matlab.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons/exercises.
Assessment
Assignments.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
