Learning outcomes

Upon completing the component students will

- be able to demonstrate an elementary Modern Irish vocabulary

- Be able to understand simple spoken and written Irish

- Be able to write and speak simple Irish sentences

- Be able to show a basic knowledge of Irish grammar

- Be able to show a basic knowledge in Irish literature

Content

The course deals with central aspects of Modern Irish grammar. It provides basic proficiency in reading and writing Modern Irish. Speaking and listening comprehension are trained through group discussions.

Instruction

Campus course: Group instruction. The language of instruction is English.

Internet-based course: Teaching is conducted in a virtual learning environment. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

Campus course: Examination is done both orally and in writing as well as by continuous assessment.

Internet-based course: The course will be assessed on the basis of a written examination as well as by continuous assessment. Assessment may also include an oral component.

Grades used are either Fail, Pass, or Pass with Distinction.

Students who do not achieve a passing grade on the regular examination will have another opportunity to take the examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail a certain examination twice have the right upon request, following consultation with the head of department, to have another examiner appointed.

Other directives

For admission to the course Celtic languages B another 22.7 higher education credits from Celtic languages A are required.

If the syllabus or course reading for a component has been changed, students have a right to be examined under the original syllabus and course reading on two occasions during the following semester. Normally this right then expires. Otherwise there are no limitations on the number of examination opportunities.
