Learning outcomes

For the grade of Pass, on completion of the course students should be able to

  • carry out an empirical or theoretical study based on a linguistic or literary research question linked to their chosen specialisation
  • draw conclusions and provide arguments from the empirical data and others' standpoints
  • plan the project, follow the plan and take responsibility for subsidiary tasks
  • find relevant and appropriate literature for the assignment, and read and accurately summarise relevant parts of this literature
  • present the result in an independent thesis structured in accordance with the research question, the result and the supporting argumentation
  • defend and discuss the thesis orally with the peer examiner at a seminar
  • publicly discuss a thesis in the subject area at the same level in terms of its research question, result, argumentation and presentation.

Content

The student carries out an independent project in the form of an empirical or purely theoretical study based on a question of linguistics or literary studies.

Instruction

Instruction is given in the form of seminars and individual supervision. Supervision is given during the regular duration of the course. The degree project is carried out under the guidance of a supervisor who delivers detailed instructions.

Assessment

Assessment takes place in the form of a presentation and defence of the student's own thesis and critical review of another student's thesis. If no other thesis is available, the critical review can be replaced by a written or oral assignment in the form of a critical summary of a research article. The thesis may be written in English or Swedish. The presentation may be held in English or Swedish. The grade is based on both the quality of the thesis and the degree of independence during the project. Furthermore, account is taken of the public discussion and defence.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.
