Learning outcomes
The course intends to give an introduction to Ottoman texts written with the Arabic script.
For the grade of Pass, on completion of the course students should be able to
knowledge and understanding
- describe the Ottoman writing system
- describe the basic features of Ottoman grammar
- describe grammatical and lexical differences between Ottoman and Turkish
competence and skills
- read and transcribe simple Ottoman texts written with the Arabic script
- analyse the language and content of the texts using linguistic methods
- translate the texts into Swedish
judgement and approach
- reflect critically on Ottoman literature as cultural heritage in Turkey.
Content
Reading, analysis and translation of Ottoman texts written with the Arabic script. Comparative analysis between Ottoman and Turkish.
Instruction
The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The students' own learning activities are crucial during the course.
Assessment
The course has two assessment components:
- continuous oral and written assignments
- a final written take-home assignment.
For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.
