Entry requirements

120 credits including 40 credits in technology/physics/chemistry. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the possibility of nanomaterials to contribute to more efficient engineering designs in terms of energy and environment,
  • discuss different techniques for producing nanomaterials,
  • exemplify nanomaterials that require clean room environment for their synthesis and nanomaterials which can be synthesised using conventional laboratory techniques
  • desig a nanomaterial for a complex enginnering system where nanoscale properties are of importance,
  • use literature surveys to find production techniques that allow realisation of new ideas for nanomaterials.

Content

Nanomaterials have revolutionised our lives. They can be made by adding nanoscale components into existing materials or by designing them on their own. This course will present nanomaterials for a number of different applications related to for example energy and water purifying techniques, to show the multidisciplinary possibilities of nanomaterials. Production routes, analytical techniques and the fundamental physical and chemical principles related to nanomaterials will be discussed.

Lectures, laboratory work, group assignment.

Assessment

Oral exam. Mandatory laboratory work and group assignment.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
