Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering, including 60 credits in Electrical Engineering. In addition 10 credits at Master's level including Power Electronics II. Participation in one of the courses Rotating Electrical Machines and Design of Electric Motors. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the main components and their function in an electric railway systems, including the track, rolling stock, equipment on board, pantographs and booster transformers,
  • make quantative assessments on limitations as for speed, inclination, rail radius, etc. for trains, subway and trams with regards to dynamic models,
  • calculate acceleration, braking forces, energy consumption and losses for trains and trams,
  • describe railroad security systems and their signal systems,
  • suport of energy supply for electrical railroads, components from power systems to vehicles,
  • describe different electrical propulsion systems and thier components, and analyze which voltage levels and frequencies are used in different trains, subways and trams.

Content

Components in an electrical railroad, both infrastructure and vehicle. The dynamics and forces between wheel and track in rail bould vehicles. Power requirements. Drag and brake power. Electricity supply for railroads: components from power systems to vehicles. Safty and introduction to signal systems.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, supervision of project.

Assessment

Written exam. Oral presentation of project.

If there are special reasons for doing so, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination method of assessment and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
