Entry requirements
Bachelor degree of at least 180 credits, including 70 credits in physics, chemistry, material science and/or materials engineering and 20 credits in mathematics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. (A Swedish Bachelor's degree fulfils the requirement in English.)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- assess how the use of a material can cause environmental problems and how these can be minimized,
- describe how different materials can be recycled and what factors may complicate the recycling process,
- evaluate and critically review a life-cycle analysis of an existing process,
- describe energy usage in material production.
Content
The concept of sustainable development. Materials engineering and the environment. Life-cycle analysis. Materials, energy and sustainability. Materials use and economic growth. Life cycle design, recycling of electric vehicles batteries. Rare earth elements. Plastic recycling, microplastics. Industrial Waste and Municipal Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars and project work.
Assessment
Written examination (4 credits). Oral presentations of project work and active participation in seminars (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
