Entry requirements
120 credits in science/engineering including 15 credits in electrical engineering. Power Elektronics II, Electric Propulsion Systems, Batteries and Storage. Participation in Design of Electric Motors, or taken in parallell. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- calculate forces and torques on an electric car during driving,
- calculate forces on and oscillation amplitude of a simple combination of spring and damper, and from the result reason about how the car's driving properties are affected by an uneven road surface,
- analyze and evaluate the different charging methods,
- account for and critically analyze the powertrain's different parts, its function and how the parts interact,
- calculate factors that influence the electric car's energy consumption, efficiency, driving cycle and torque,
- account for electric cars' environmental, societal and ethical aspects.
Content
Parts of the powertrain, its function and interaction; battery, inverter, electric motor, gear, differential, measuring system, generator. Mechanics during car driving: Laws of motion and force and torque equilibria. Rolling friction and rolling resistance. Suspension. Spring and damper in one dimension. Charging of electric cars. Concepts such as: driving cycle, energy, power and torque. Present and future perspectives from the automotive industry. The electric car in society: problems, limitations and opportunities. The history and development of the electric car. The electric car from an environmental, societal and ethical perspective.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, and one calculation laboratory work. Practical demonstration of driving an electrical car.
Assessment
Written exam and laboratory work.
If there are special reasons for doing so, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination method of assessment and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
