Forskning

Huvudsaklig forskningsinriktning

Min forskning faller i allmänhet inom det egyptologiska religionsvetenskapliga fältet med fokus på fornegyptisk text, ikonografi och sakral arkitektur. I min första avhandling i egyptologi, Nut – The Goddess of Life in Text and Iconography (2003), undersökte jag utvecklingen av föreställningarna kring en specifik fornegyptisk gudinna, Nut, under ca 2000 år. Arbetet förankrades teoretiskt inom områden som filologi, metaforik, ikonologi samt personifikationsteori.

En med tiden allt större arkeologisk verksamhet i Egypten ledde sedermera till ett växande intresse för sakral arkitektur. Monumentala ritualiseringsprocesser och arkitekturens inneboende symbolik ligger därför till grund i min avhandling i religionshistoria, The Performative Structure. Ritualizing the Pyramid of Pepy I (2013). Här tittade jag närmare på hur arkitekturens formspråk i kombination med olika text- och bildprogram skapade en rumsligt förankrad rituell verksamhet. Huvuddelen av arbetet ägnades åt en analys och tolkning av pyramidtexterna i kung Pepy I:s pyramid från ca 2300 f.Kr.

Intresset för fornegyptiska religiösa texter och monumentalarkitektur har också resulterat i två böcker på svenska. Egyptens pyramid. Evighetens arkitektur i forntid och nutid (2009) innehåller en noggrann genomgång av samtliga fornegyptiska pyramidkomplex, deras arkitektoniska utveckling, ideologiska förankring, samt roll i den moderna arkeologihistorien. De dödas bok. Den fornegyptiska dödsboken i översättning och kommentar (2016) är den första översättningen av denna textsamling från fornegyptiska till svenska. Arbetet innehåller dessutom en introduktion som placerar Dödsboken i västerlandets Egypten-reception, liksom innehållsliga kommentarer till varje enskild formel (ca 200 stycken).

Pågående forskningsprojekt

Under arbetstiteln Garments for Eternity: The Collection of Inscribed Mummy-bandages in the Museum Gustavianum, Uppsala, bearbetar jag en stor samling mumiebindor med fornegyptiska texter ur Dödsboken. Syftet är en fullständig publikation inklusive paleografisk bearbetning av ca 300 specimen av varierande omfång. För projektet har tilldelats medel från Stiftelsen Lars Hiertas Minne, Vitterhetsakademins västeuropastipendium, samt Gerd och Gad Rausings Fond.

Andra pågående projekt är ytterligare översättningar med kommentarer av centrala fornegyptiska textsamlingar. Under innevarande år har jag också påbörjat en omfattande undersökning av rituella identifikationsprocesser i pyramidtexterna.
