Over 100 researchers from across the world gathered for the Nordic Conference on Racism and Education 2024

On 15-15 May 2024, over 100 researchers working in the field of racism and education met in Uppsala to discuss the state of racism studies today, and to open new avenues for discussion and collaboration.

The conference aimed to open discussions on how to understand the complex realities of racism and ethnic and religious discrimination in relation to education – which is often heralded in policy discourse as key to combat racism and to promote an inclusive democratic society. The conference strived to bridge disciplinary, thematic, theoretical and methodological boundaries - including long-standing barriers between research on racism and antisemitism - in order to open a space for critical scholarship during this divisive time.

Kalwant Bhopal (Professor, Director of the Centre for Research in Race & Education (CRRE), University of Birmingham, UK) opened the conference with her keynote Race and Education – Reproducing White Supremacy. The conference closed with a keynote by Monique Eckmann (Professor Emerita in Sociology, School for Social Work, HES-SO/University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Western Switzerland, Geneva) on Racisms and Antisemitisms in Education. The Challenge of Thinking both Together without Obliterating the Specificities and Specific Experiences.

The conference was organized by Uppsala University, Department of Education (EDU), together with the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism (CEMFOR/UU), the Segerstedt Institute (GU), the Living History Forum, Department of Society, Culture and Identity (MAU) and the Forum for Jewish Studies (UU).
