Housing

Formal exchange students from exchange agreements with a good balance between incoming and outgoing students are given priority for student housing, given that they submit their housing application on time and accept an offer for housing when made.

At Uppsala University there are no halls of residences, colleges or other forms of ‘university housing’. All rooms that students live in are regular rooms owned by a variety of different housing companies. These rooms are administered by the private company Uppsala University Housing Office. The Uppsala University Housing Office has a detailed website explaining all you might need to know about housing in Uppsala and Visby.

Housing through Uppsala University Housing Office

If you have applied for an exchange program at Uppsala University, you can apply for housing as soon as the application period starts, even if you have not received your Certificate of Acceptance yet. Go to Uppsala University Housing Office's website and follow the instructions on application for housing. Note that the Uppsala University Housing Office is a private company and that all questions or comments about housing matters should be sent to info@housingoffice.se. The application process is the same for both campuses and you should use the same application from the Uppsala University Housing Office's website. Go to the Housing Office's website for more information on housing for exchange students on Campus Gotland.

The application dates for housing is decided by the private company Uppsala University Housing Office but the application period is usually 15 November–30 November for the following spring semester and 15 May – 31 May for the following autumn semester / full year. The Uppsala University Housing Office usually sends accommodation offers at the beginning of December for the spring semester and beginning of June for the autumn semester / full year. When you receive an offer from the Uppsala University Housing Office, make sure you accept it within the deadline (usually a couple of days). Once you accept an offer from the Uppsala University Housing Office, you sign a lease and this lease is binding.

Uppsala University does not offer meal plans. You can cook in shared kitchens in student housing as well as buy meals at the university’s cafeterias, at the student nations, or in town.

For all questions about housing in Uppsala, please contact the private company Uppsala University Housing Office at info@housingoffice.se. For housing in Visby, contact boende@rindi.com.

I have signed a lease but it ends before the end of the term and I still have an exam after that date. Can I extend my stay?

Yes, don’t worry! If you need a short extension of your lease, we can help you with your extension request to the Uppsala University Housing Office about 3 months before the end of the lease. Email mobility@uu.se for exchange students through a university-wide exchange agreement or your department if you are an exchange student through a departmental agreement.

Find housing on your own

We strongly recommend that you avail yourself to the student accommodation offered by the Uppsala University Housing Office as it is very difficult to find an apartment in Uppsala and in Visby. However, we have gathered a couple of tips if you would like to find accommodation on your own.

Uppsala

In Uppsala, you can check the website Studentboet for accommodations, which the Student Union links to from their website.

Visby

In Visby, you can check the housing company Gotlands studentbostad

Note that the Unit for International Mobility cannot help you to find housing on your own and that Uppsala University takes no responsibility for these listings.
