Susanna Barrineau presents “Thinking with soils”: relational and care-full perspectives on carbon farming futures and deep transformations - her PhD work at Mistra Environmental Communication research programme.
Agri-food sectors are becoming spaces of climate action for more sustainable futures. My thesis orients itself towards the exploration of carbon farming in agriculture as a socio-ecological transformation and a context of human-soil relations. In working with relational perspectives and futures thinking, my aim is to cultivate possibility thinking, where “thinking with soils” helps make sense of existing human-soil relations in carbon farming contexts but also acts as invitation to reframe and reimagine those relationships. In this way, this thesis explores the possibilities for deep transformation and the kinds of futures made (un)imaginable and (in)actionable.
Susanna Barrineau is in the final stages of her PhD journey. Her research examines how human-nature relationships unfold within agriculture and food system transformations, viewed through the lenses of care, futures, and time.
