Welcome to the vernissage and photo exhibition!
Chiara D'Agata, PhD student in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development at the Department of Earth Sciences, has been investigating Gotland’s coastal habitats to understand the relationship between the marine resources and human well-being.
As part of her doctoral studies, she has spent many hours underwater around Gotland, studying the relationships between vegetation and marine animals.
- While closely observing this “hidden” world, it came to my mind that when we talk about the Baltic Sea, we often hear that it is a murky, cold, and dead sea, with no colourful or interesting living things. But is this true?
- With this exhibition, I would like to offer a different perspective. On land, Lergrav, Valleviken, Gustavsvik, and Katthammarsvik are among the most visited bays around Gotland. But what lives under their surface?

About Chiara D'Agata
Chiara D'Agata is a PhD student at the Department of Earth Sciences; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU), as well as at the University’s interdisciplinary research school in sustainable development (GRASS).
On Friday 28 August, she will defend her thesis Perspectives on coastal vegetated habitats: Integrating ecological dynamics, historical use, and fishers’ ecological knowledge. Read more about the thesis.
