After just over a decade of low interest, the trend for meteorology courses at Uppsala University and Stockholm University is now reversing, and the number of applicants is rising. This positive development is the result of a joint initiative by the universities, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and the Swedish Armed Forces to attract more people to the profession.

Erik Sahlée, senior lecturer in meteorology, emphasises that meteorologists play a crucial role in society and he foresees a steadily growing need in the future.

“There is a high demand for meteorologists across various sectors. “This is truly a profession of vital importance to society, as meteorologists protect lives, infrastructure and national security by forecasting extreme weather and providing critical decision-making data to the authorities. Without meteorological forecasts, large parts of society’s functions would grind to a halt or be exposed to enormous risks,” says Erik Sahlée.
